At Near, we connect top talent in Latin America with exciting remote opportunities at U.S.-based companies. Our mission is to create better lives by fostering a remote work culture that transcends borders.
About the Company:
Our client is a leading retail hardware company operating 148 stores in the United States. The organization is growth- and acquisition-driven, with a collaborative accounting and finance team supporting complex, multi-location operations.
About the Role:
We’re looking for a hands-on Senior Staff Accountant to take ownership of key accounting processes and support a fast-growing retail organization. You’ll report directly to the Controller, collaborate closely with the Accounting Manager and broader accounting and finance teams, and help strengthen the month-end close process.
This is an individual-contributor role for a technically strong accountant who can manage complex reconciliations, identify issues, prepare correcting entries, and adapt quickly as the company acquires new stores.
You Will:
Own designated areas of the month-end close process, including journal entries, accruals, allocations, and adjusting entries.
Maintain the fixed asset subledger, including additions, disposals, transfers, depreciation, and reconciliation to the general ledger.
Prepare and review general ledger account reconciliations, investigate discrepancies, and resolve reconciling items.
Support lease accounting under ASC 842, including lease schedules, ROU asset amortization, lease liability accretion, and reconciliations.
Perform inventory accounting activities, including inventory sub-system reconciliations, reserve analysis, shrink, and cost variance review.
Maintain prepaid expense schedules, monthly amortization entries, and reconciliations.
Support revenue recognition activities under ASC 606, including discounts, returns, and deferred revenue/gift card accounting.
Assist with quarterly reviews, year-end audits, audit schedules, and auditor requests.
Partner with accounting, finance, and banking teams on cash reconciliations and other cross-functional processes.
Identify process improvements, strengthen controls, and use AI and automation tools to improve accounting workflows.
Support special projects related to new store acquisitions and changing business needs.
About You:
Your Background:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
4–6+ years of progressive general ledger accounting experience.
Strong U.S. GAAP knowledge, including debits and credits, journal entries, correcting entries, and account reconciliations.
Deep, hands-on fixed asset accounting experience is required.
Proven ownership of balance sheet reconciliations and month-end close processes.
Experience with lease accounting under ASC 842.
Experience with inventory accounting, preferably within a multi-location retail environment.
Advanced Excel skills, including Pivot Tables, VLOOKUPs, and complex formulas.
Experience with an ERP/general ledger system; Great Plains experience is a plus.
Fluent English communication skills and comfort working with U.S.-based teams.
Comfortable working remotely during Eastern Time business hours.
Soft Skills:
Positive, collaborative team player who is willing to support others when priorities shift.
Adaptable and comfortable working in a fast-paced, acquisition-driven environment.
Detail-oriented, analytical, and proactive in identifying and resolving accounting issues.
Able to manage assigned responsibilities independently while collaborating across teams.
Curious and open to using AI and automation tools in daily accounting workflows.
Nice to Have:
CPA license or active pursuit of CPA certification.
Experience supporting external audits or working with outside auditors.
Retail accounting experience, especially inventory accounting and multi-location operations.
Experience with ASC 606 revenue recognition.
Prior experience with Great Plains and Management Reporter.
Lease accounting experience beyond core ASC 842 knowledge.
Compensation & Benefits:
Compensation: $4,000–$5,500 USD/month, depending on experience.
Contractor engagement.
Recommended time off: approximately 10 paid days annually, plus applicable U.S. company holidays.
