Overview
As a Senior Payments Engineer, you’ll work on the backend systems responsible for moving and tracking real money across Spritz’s payment infrastructure.
You’ll own and improve systems involving payment state machines, ACH processing, payment status propagation, reconciliation, financial state, and reliability at scale. You’ll be expected to work independently, ship production code, and help ensure that money movement remains accurate, observable, and resilient.
This is a highly hands-on role for an engineer who has personally shipped and operated production systems that move real money.
Responsibilities:
Build and maintain backend infrastructure for real-money movement and payment processing.
Work across payment rails including ACH, RTP, Wire, ACH Debit, and Bill Pay, with ACH being a particularly important area.
Design and maintain reliable payment state machines and workflows.
Build systems that correctly handle duplicate instructions, retries, out-of-order events, webhooks, returns, and other payment edge cases.
Implement idempotency and transactional safeguards to prevent duplicate or incorrect money movement.
Work on payment status propagation and synchronization with banking partners.
Build and improve reconciliation processes and financial state management.
Help ensure systems are observable, auditable, and resilient, with strong monitoring and alerting.
Diagnose production issues and proactively eliminate silent failures.
Work with AWS-based infrastructure and distributed systems.
Contribute to architectural decisions and scaling initiatives as the company grows.
Take ownership of projects from design through production operation.
Work closely with the Lead Engineer and broader team while operating with a high degree of autonomy.
Use AI agents as a core part of your engineering workflow to design, build, test, and ship software. AI-native engineering is a key requirement for this role.
Requirements
5+ years of professional backend engineering experience, with strong senior-level ownership.
Strong production experience with TypeScript and Node.js.
Proven experience building and operating payment or financial systems that move real money, ideally across ACH, RTP, Wire, or similar payment rails.
Strong understanding of distributed systems, idempotency, transactional integrity, event-driven architecture, and system reliability.
Hands-on experience with AWS and production cloud infrastructure, including services such as Lambda, SQS, ECS, RDS, DynamoDB, or equivalent.
Experience with payment processing, financial state, reconciliation, or ledger systems.
Strong production debugging and incident-resolution experience, particularly in systems where transaction accuracy and reliability are critical.
Highly proficient with AI coding agents and AI-native development workflows, using tools such as Claude Code, Codex CLI, Cursor Agents, or similar.
Ability to work independently, navigate complex systems, and ship production code with minimal supervision.
Ability to travel to New York City, with a valid ESTA/Visa Waiver or B1/B2 visa.
Experience with crypto, stablecoins, Solana, or EVM.
Experience with Modern Treasury, Stripe Treasury, or similar payment infrastructure.
Experience with double-entry ledger/accounting systems.
Experience with Effect or typed functional programming.
Experience operating serverless systems at scale.
Schedule
Monday–Friday, full-time, contractor role with daily availability during EST.
