At Near, we help top talent in Latin America find remote roles with US companies. Our mission is to create better lives by fostering a remote work culture that transcends borders.
Our fast-growing US-based staffing client is looking for a Lead Engineer - a true player-coach who codes, leads, and moves fast. This is a hands-on, high-impact role for someone who thrives in small, high-velocity teams and gets energized by shipping nonstop. You'll evaluate the current engineering setup, bring a clear point of view on how to make things better, and build and automate workflows across every department. You'll work closely with the Co-founders to drive technical decisions and help the company reach its next level.
Design and evolve the company's technical architecture and infrastructure, ensuring scalability, reliability, and maintainability as the business grows.
Contribute hands-on to both backend (TypeScript/Node.js, Python) and frontend (React) codebases.
Evaluate the current setup and identify opportunities to improve speed and execution.
Help the company move faster through better tooling, systems, and AI adoption
Make critical architectural decisions across the full stack, including AI integrations, automation pipelines, and data systems.
Architect and implement AI-powered features, including LLM integrations, vector databases, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) systems.
Build and deploy AI agents that automate workflows and dramatically increase the team's shipping velocity.
Lead and inspire a small, high-velocity engineering team — setting the technical vision, fostering a culture of ownership, and ensuring the team ships fast and consistently, while remaining hands-on technically
Establish engineering standards and drive best practices across the team, including AI-first development approaches.
Conduct code reviews, provide technical mentorship, and support career growth for engineers.
Collaborate with the Co-founders to translate business goals into sound technical solutions.
Monitor system health, performance, and reliability, identifying and resolving bottlenecks.
Build and maintain AI-powered workflows and automation systems that serve every department in the business.
7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a background in fast-paced startups or small teams.
A hands-on engineer first - you write code every day and have no interest in a purely managerial role.
Proven experience leading small engineering teams, with clear examples of workflow improvements and technical wins you drove.
Full-stack proficiency with modern tooling; experience with the current stack (AWS serverless, TypeScript/Node.js, React) is a strong plus.
Deeply comfortable with AI - you use it to move faster, build agents, and make your team more effective.
Strong opinions on how to ship quickly with a lean team, and a track record to back them up.
Experience in recruiting tech, HR tech, automation startups, or dev agencies is a bonus.
Excellent communication skills and fluency in English (written and spoken).
Bonus Points:
Background at AI-forward startups (e.g. AI interviewers, automation tools, recruitment tech).
Experience at development agencies that have worked with recruiting or staffing companies.
Familiarity with prompt engineering, LLMs, or RAG systems.
