Overview
The Chief Financial Officer is responsible for management of the company’s accounting and finance staff, directing the preparation of accounting statements, treasury and cash management, management of insurance negotiations and coverages, management of real estate taxes, financial planning and analysis, and reporting to syndicated investors and joint venture partners. As the company grows, so will this person’s scope of duties to include full responsibility for activities in strategic planning, economic analysis, sourcing and securing equity and debt placements, and analysis and execution of acquisition opportunities.
Responsibilities
Supervise and develop the accounting and a back-office team of 3 - 4
Prepare financial statements and maintain financial records for multiple entities
Manage monthly, quarterly and annual reporting requirements
Prepare work papers and provide other necessary support to tax accountants & auditors
Perform treasury activities including reporting daily cash, payment recommendations and execute banking transactions
Develop and enforce policies, procedures and internal controls
Maintain budgets and cash forecasts working with all levels of management for both corporate level and project level financials
Communicate and respond with all departments to gather and share information
Build rapport, trust and long-term relationships with key stakeholders including lending institutions
Provide strategic advice to the leadership team
Actively participate and prepare for weekly meetings with the management team
Prepare customized reports for investors, lenders, construction managers and executives
Read and understand all new loans and partnership/venture agreements
Monitor compliance with multiple loans and partnership/joint venture agreements
Gain a thorough understanding of revenues that can be billed by corporate subsidiaries to each project such as: general contractor fees, general conditions, developer fees, asset management fees, storage fees
Manage billings of fees to projects
Coordinate with tax accountants to meet filing requirements including K-1s and 1099s
File monthly sales taxes and manage other local tax requirements
Manage invoice capture and payment process assuring expenditures are properly coded
Manage company credit card program
Assist construction managers and construction accountants with monthly project billings and pay applications
For operating properties managed by third-party property review the monthly financials they present for accuracy and consistency
Oversee the preparation of customized draw request packages for lenders and respond to request from lenders
Support development and legal teams with financial requests on new acquisitions of properties and new construction projects
Advise on and manage insurance programs for both corporate level policies and project level policies
Manage light inventory accounting including internal transfers from warehouse to projects
Oversee internal HR policies and corporate payroll
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
Minimum 10 years’ experience in applying GAAP to the preparation of real estate company financial statements and accounting for various real estate transactions.
Ideal candidates will have extensive, prior experience in at least one of the following types of companies: real estate development, real estate private equity, commercial real estate lending, multifamily operations and/or multifamily construction.
Experience in consulting will be considered only if the majority of client work was with real estate development or real estate private equity clients.
Real estate tax management experience.
Expert knowledge of real estate development proformas and real estate structured finance required
Experience managing various insurance providers and coverages in real estate development and management operations.
Treasury management and liquidity investment experience.
Partnership and joint venture accounting processes and reporting experience.
Accounting and inventory management experience in a manufacturing setting would be helpful.
Bachelor's in Accounting or Finance from an accredited institution
CPA or MBA designation desired
Minimum of ten years of relevant professional experience
Strong excel skills including pivot tables and forecast modeling
Ability to prepare GAAP and tax basis financial statements
Previous management experience and ability to lead a small team
Previous experience managing lender and investor relationships and correspondence
Experience with Sage Intacct desired or another ERP system such as NetSuite or Microsoft Dynamics
Experience with Procore desired (construction management tool)
Experience in consulting will be considered only if the majority of client work was with real estate development or real estate private equity clients.
Ability to analyze and build integrated balance sheet, cash flow & income statement models for operating companies and subsidiaries
Good verbal and written communication skills and ability to work with and support all levels in the organization
