You will be in an exciting entrepreneurial position to both scale Vanreusel Ventures (internal) as well as be part of our external corporate finance/CFO delivery team (external).
This is a fast-paced, high-energy, deadline-driven position in an entrepreneurial environment. Although we are based in San Francisco, the job can be done 100% remotely if needed. Especially for the right person.
Reporting to the chief executive officer (CEO), the Controller will be responsible for oversight of all finance, accounting, and reporting activities for a diverse group of clients with budgets between $1 million-50 million.
As the number-two executive to the CFO, the Controller will be involved in supporting presentations to the board finance and audit committee and will work closely with the senior leadership team.
The Controller will lead all day-to-day finance operations internally, as well as externally for a select group of for-profit clients with budgets between $ 2 million and $ 5 million and supervise between 2-5 staff members, including functional responsibility over accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and grants administration.
The Controller will ensure that clients have the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and conduct flawless audits, accurate financials, robust reporting, and killer stakeholder communication.
Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of financial status.
Maintain a strategic partnership with FP&A team; Assist with budgeting and forecasting and ongoing variance analysis.
Assist leadership in the annual budgeting and planning process; administer and review all financial plans and compare to actual results with a view to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate.
Timely and accurate maintenance of the books of accounts, preparation of accounts and financial statements monthly (within 10 days of the close of the month).
Send the required management reports on time (within 15 days of the close of the month). (Including a monthly key performance indicator table)
Analyze costs and profits on a quarterly basis to cut costs and increase profit.
Set and track financial KPIs on a monthly basis, and prepare board deck by delegating within the internal team to complete.
Plan, create and manage a monthly working budget, finances and banking accounts. Maintain a monthly liquidity/cash flow statement.
Ensure regulatory compliance and 100% timely payment of various taxes and reporting.
Assist of all accounting operations, including Billing, A/R, and A/P
Establish, monitor, and enforce a comprehensive set of internal controls; establish policies and procedures around accounting and related financial issues
Establish GAAP accounting standards and procedures
Prepare various monthly and annual corporate financial reports for clients including consolidated financial statements, income statements, balance sheet statements, cash-flow statements, etc.
Help oversee external audits of client accounting books as required by the board or bank mandates and maintain due diligence ready records
Ensure that financial reports comply with GAAP and established accounting standards and procedures
Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets, and actual expenditures.
Implement and follow a process-oriented approach to the maintenance of various books of accounts, ensuring the accuracy of monthly reconciliation of general ledger and accounts
Ownership of financial reporting, including creating a narrative regarding Company performance and variances to budget/forecast. Distribute results to senior management and key stakeholders
A foundational understanding of corporate income tax and management of third-party tax advisors
Interact cross-functionally to understand business issues which then have implications on the underlying accounting treatment
Implement financial systems and controls to mitigate misstatements in financial reporting.
Identify opportunities to improve financial and operational systems and cost-effectiveness
Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls

4 Year Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance or related area.
5-7 years experience as a Senior Accountant and 3 years as a Controller
Experience in consulting a big plus
Experience with multi-Currency accounting and working with international companies
Experience working with start-ups (VC backed), small and middle market companies (PE backed)
CPA, or working towards designation
Deep knowledge using QuickBooks (Online and Enterprise), Xero. Further experience using Netsuite, Intacct a plus
